Species: Human

History: HERE.

Personality: Sam is an extremely compassionate individual who values loyalty and the happiness of his friends and family above all else. We are told almost immediately following his introduction that he's known loss, but he has sprung back from it through helping others. He works at the VA counselling fellow veterans who have experienced trauma, and thoroughly enjoys it. When Captain America comes into his life however, he doesn't hesitate to put his world on hold to help her. Though many people walk on eggshells around her after all she's seen and been through, Sam is in a unique position to wade through all that and relate to her as a solider. Expertly making that connection, the first question of content he asks her is: 'What makes you happy?' This is what he helps soldiers find every day: their new path in civilian life. It's easy to feel lost and displaced when coming home from overseas and he knows that firsthand.

While it's clear Sam has never had any disciplinary issue in the military, he cites not answering to anyone as the biggest upside of civilian life. He enjoys being his own person now though he was proud to serve and follow orders while he was in. These do not contradict, but rather complement each other. He values where he comes from and where he's been, but he never lets that hold him back in moving forward. Happiness is not stagnant to Sam Wilson but a perpetually moving target that he encourages himself and others to catch up to.

The opening scene of Captain America: The Winter Soldier is just that: Cap and Sam pit against each other in a race that can never have a different outcome. Every time Steve (Stephanie) laps Sam, he (she) shouts 'On your left!' and it makes Sam strive to run faster each time though he knows he can't win against her. He immediately recognizes her, of course, but treats her like anyone else and that's what ultimately starts building her trust in him. This also displays his competitive nature, and that he will never stop striving to be better in any aspect of his life.

Sam has a good sense of humor, and while he's human and it can be used to deflect, usually this is not for his benefit but for the other person's. His demeanor is always warm and sincere and it's easy to see why so many people trust him so instantly. He also has supreme self-confidence without being smarmy or arrogant about it. He knows he's cool and people in his orbit are drawn to him because of it. He doesn't have to put anyone down to elevate himself, and again, teaches people how to employ this confidence in their own lives through his example.

While he is determined (in most cases) to do the right thing, his need to be loyal and helpful will trump this. He is already bound to Cap's cause the moment they meet, and when she shows up on his door on the run Sam doesn't hesitate to take her in. Pretty much from the get-go, we see that he'd do anything for her (Cap) even if it causes him to bend his morals a bit. That said, he helps Cap and Nat take down the HYDRA sect inside SHIELD and the movie concludes with Sam pledging to help find Bucky Barnes aka the Winter Soldier. Sam Wilson is brave to a fault as well where his friends are concerned and he will put his own life on the line again and again to help them out.
